Capla Kesting Fine Art is pleased to present:
Lincoln Capla : American Painting 2000 - 2006
April 6th – April 30, 2007
Reception for the public: Friday April 6, 2007 from 7:00 – 10:00 PM

At his death in 2006, Lincoln Capla left behind a legacy of over 2000 paintings and works on paper. His life, hastened by cancer, was exemplified by his work, in a minimalist style, subtracting color and form from his artwork to achieve, “the clearest sense and truest form of expression”

This installation, American Painting 2000 – 2006 is the first posthumous exhibition and largest scale retrospective of his work. Isolating only works produced in this century, we are able to find focus on themes Lincoln sought to express in his artwork during the final phase of his career.

Path to Glory, a series of paintings produced during this period, reflect on the artist's conscious thought of life, death and the afterlife. Painted in grayscale, Untitled Path to Glory, mixed media on canvas, 78” x 36”, 2003-2004, depicts a maze of ladders, diagonal lines cutting through the canvas leading the viewer on a series of tangents with only a horizon to point the way and bring peace to the eye. Framed with an arc of medial lines running the outskirts of the composition, the eye is brought to the top and bottom of the painting, with a white floating cloud contrasted by a dark abyss as the destinations a viewer must choose between.

In another work, American Painting, acrylic on found object, 2003, Lincoln shows the simple minimal philosophy behind his painting. A page torn from an art history book by the same name, is ripped and then left a small dot of red paint at its bottom right corner, which is signed and dated as a complete thought. “The painting is the red dot, at the bottom of the piece, who has the right to say American painting died with Jackson Pollock?"

The installation of artwork encompasses a large collection and has a full color catalog published by the gallery for the exhibition. We hope you will be able to attend the opening night reception for the public, or view the collection during our regular business hours of Tuesday to Saturday Noon until 6pm.

Directions: Bedford Ave L train Stop. Exit the subway walking west on North 7th, away from river, 2 blocks to Roebling, then proceed south 2 blocks to North 5th. The gallery is located on the corner of North 5th and Roebling.

Founded in October of 2003 by David Kesting and Lincoln Capla, Capla Kesting Fine Art has become synonymous with the exposure of underground artists. Created primarily as a venue to expose their work, and that of their talented group of friends CKFA has developed a reputation for their off the beaten path approach to advancing the public’s knowledge of premier talents that demand our attention.

“We’re not here making a statement. We’re just showing art we think deserves to be shown. The goal and whole idea of the place is to help bring artists that we respect and enjoy to the attention of the public.” - Lincoln Capla & David Kesting
