LOS ANGELES HOSTS NUDE BRITNEY BIRTH SCULPTURE
In Acclaimed East and West Coast Exhibit at Standard Hotel

LOS ANGELES (November 2006) – The opportunity to compare the contemporary work of New York and Los Angeles artists arrives with the critically acclaimed exhibit, Sunset & St. Marks, which goes on display at the Standard Hotel for their latest installment of The Standard Downtown Art Series starting November 2nd. Called “a cultivation of the finest upcoming artists from Los Angeles and New York City,” the exhibit also features the infamous “Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston,” the sculpture of a nude Britney Spears on all fours and giving birth on a bearskin rug, which made headlines last April.

The ‘bicoastal’ exhibit’s curator, Travis Lindquist, chose the works of 25 artists laboring in a similar zeitgeist. “I wanted the exhibit to reflect striking similarities and subtle differences between coasts to downplay any ‘east coast vs. west coast’ expectations,” says Lindquist, who is also a featured artist, “but the comparisons between New York and Los Angeles are unavoidable.”

Sunset & St. Marks originated at Capla Kesting Fine Arts in New York City with enthusiastic critical response: “What's happening here is noteworthy not because it is something new, but the sheer enthusiasm for painting is exciting in and of itself. A trend that Picasso---and certainly Warhol--would have liked,” said Doug McClemont for Saatchi Gallery.

Capla Kesting also played host to exhibition of Daniel Edwards’s Britney birth sculpture for which a “shocked and dumbfounded” Britney Spears was quoted in Glamour UK saying, “They can show it anywhere they want, just not in my beautiful home!” The sculpture reportedly drew thousands of angry emails from both pro-life and pro-choice advocates.

Sunset & St. Marks is presented by courtesy of The Standard Downtown Art Series’ commitment to showcasing and supporting emerging talent from around the world, and will be free to the public at the Standard Hotel, 550 South Flower at 6th St. in Los Angeles from November 2nd to 9th and open from 12:00 to 7:00 PM. The opening night reception for the exhibition will be Tuesday, November 2nd from 6:00 - 9:00 PM. For Immediate Release:
Capla Kesting Fine Art, working with the Standard Downtown Art Series, is pleased to announce that their critically acclaimed group show, Sunset & St. Marks, will be exhibited at the Standard Hotel in downtown LA from November 2 until Nov 9. Sunset and St. Marks, a exhibition which originated at the Capla Kesting Fine Arts gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has been called “a cultivation of the finest upcoming artists from Los Angeles and New York City,” and affirms The Standard Downtown Art Series’ commitment to showcasing and supporting emerging talent from around the world.

Long regarded as rival cities, New York and Los Angeles have come to symbolize the ultimate American binary opposition: cold clouds versus warm sun, brutal honesty versus a polished veneer of insincerity, walking versus driving, East Coast versus West Coast. In spite of this false dichotomy, and perhaps because of it, Sunset & St. Marks presents an offering of the youngest and brightest talents of both scenes presented together, including:
Hillary Amborn, Edwardo Benedeto, Colin Burns, Lincoln Capla, Keith Coleman, Deedee Cheriel, Bratner Deatley, Daniel Edwards, Jonny Fenix, Jason Douglas Griffin, David Hochbaum, Ara Jo, Martina Kubiyini, Travis Lindquist, Brian Leo, Shawn Bishop-Leo, Clint Peterson, Jennifer Sanchez, GoldMine ShitHouse, David Tree, David Turley, Kevin Willis and Chet Zar.

“What's happening here is noteworthy not because it is something new, but the sheer enthusiasm for painting is exciting in and of itself. A trend that Picasso---and certainly Warhol--would have liked. These people make art to amuse themselves and maybe impress a friend or two: Painting as Cool”. - Doug McClemont – Saatchi Gallery

Founded in October of 2003 by artists David Kesting and Lincoln Capla, Capla Kesting Fine Art has become synonymous with the exposure of underground artists. Created primarily as a venue to expose their work, and that of their talented group of friends, CKFA has developed a reputation for their off the beaten path approach to advancing the public’s knowledge of premier talents that demand our attention.

“We’re not here making a statement. We’re just showing art we think deserves to be shown. The goal and whole idea of the place is to help bring artists that we respect and enjoy to the attention of the public.” - Lincoln Capla & David Kesting
